Maria Masselis

After an initial period working as a professional support lawyer in the mergers and acquisitions Department for Freshfields solicitors she joined the independent bar.

She undertook pupillage at Francis Taylor Buildings (now V&B chambers) and then obtained tenancy at chambers at 1 Gray’s Inn Square specialising in criminal law.

As junior barrister she quickly developed a busy and successful defence practise, regularly appearing for individuals charged with sexual offences, drugs supply/importation and violence.

Whilst in London she acted as junior counsel in a number of cases; including offences of child abuse (shaken baby syndrome), multiple defendant rape, drugs importations, kidnap and murder.

She has experience of dealing with cases at appeal level and has been involving in cases being presented to the Criminal Cases Review Commission.

Since 1998 she has been actively involved on a pro bono basis with the Miscarriages of Justice Organisation ‘MOJO’ initiated by Paddy Hill of the Birmingham 6, who have had an integral part in such appeals as Barry George.

In 2003 she left London to join 1 Stanley Place where she has since developed her practise to include prosecution work.

She is a grade 4 prosecutor. She has also conducted cases for HMCE.

She is regularly instructed in cases involving sexual offences and violence for both prosecution and the defence.

She has wide experience of dealing with abuse of process arguments for both sides.

She has recently acted as junior counsel in prosecution murder cases, and has also lead a prosecution fraud case involving civilian staff of GMP.

In chambers she is a member of the pupillage and recruitment committee.

Interests include; reading, cooking, walking with her two dogs, and travel.

Notable Cases
R v Vijaykumaravelsingham – acted as junior counsel for the defence in a three month Sri Lankan Tamil murder case in Old Bailey. Prosecution case rested almost entirely on cell site evidence. Defendant acquitted of murder convicted of violence disorder.
R v Malcolm Gaskell – junior counsel in a murder cases involving multiple stab wounds.
R v Young & others – leading junior in prosecution of GMP civilian worker and various other individuals engaged in evading road traffic prosecutions by production of invalid insurance certificates.
R v Peter Macbeth – acted for former 1960’s pop artist charged with sexual offences. Successfully appealed Defendant’s sentence.
R v Kirkby, Burns Bradley – junior counsel in violent affray and manslaughter.
R v Daniel Browning – acted for defendant in manslaughter case involving cocktail of drugs where causation was main issue.
R v Rudolph Mancini – acted as junior counsel in armed robbery and shooting of police officer outside Preston Pub, involving complex admissibility issues of partial DNA results and cell site analysis of mobile phones.
R v Lennon – prosecuted the son of an elderly lady after she was found dead with an unusual fracture.

Current Cases
R v Bowen – prosecution of GMP officer for misconduct in a public office relating to activities with prostitutes.
R v Close – junior counsel in a large scale conspiracy to defraud. Case involves financial advice on a trans national basis.
